Here's the plan. The first return journey to the South Pole on foot and the longest unsupported polar journey in history. In October next year, Tony Haile and I will set out from Scott's hut, on the shores of McMurdo Sound on a 1,800-mile, four-month round trip, from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back. No dogs, no vehicles, no kites, no resupplies. We're calling it SOUTH.
The great Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen made the only return journey, using dogs, 93 years ago. His rival Captain Scott died on his return from the Pole just 11 miles from the relative safety of his largest depot. Since then every expedition has either been flown out from the Pole or used dogs, kites or vehicles. Many people have blamed Scott's failure on his reliance on human power, and many experts still believe an entirely human-powered journey of this magnitude to be impossible. We think otherwise.

If you read that description you know these guys are crazy, but I love watching the amazing accomplishments of mere men, especially from the comfort of my living room. Their journey is being funded by private individuals, each paying $100 to sponsor a mile of their trek. Here's wishing them luck

If you check back in the archives you'll notice the first site ever featured on White Hot Now was the tech gadget site Engadget, one of my favorites. Well, long before Engadget began this site was covering the tech gadget scene, helping mold the all-day news style blog which is so popular now. In fact Engadget (let's see how many times I can mention it) was created by one of the original editors of Gizmodo.

While, Gizmodo is still rocking with their humorous style and despite losing another one of their long time top editors on Friday they're now sporting a new look and they've promised not to faulter on thier coverage while they bring new people on board.

If something’s funny on the Internet, it’s either on here or linked from here. We have the biggest collection of movies, pictures, jokes, and games that you’ll find just about anywhere. We also have a writing staff of people that are so funny, they’re not allowed to attend funerals! This website is bigger than TheBeatles.com. And since The Beatles were bigger than Jesus, that says a lot.

I've been a fan of this site since it looked like this. (Way back when I was in college.) In spite of its name there's not much academic about the site, but if you're gonna goof off on the Internet you might as well have some laughs, right?

I remember when they had their own video show back in the day and I remember being excited for them when it got picked up by some college TV network. I remember thinking how cool it was when I recognized the host of that show, Chris Wylde, in some bit parts in movies and then as the rapping nanny on American Idol.

And today I read that their working with the guy who did The Mummy to make an Animal House style movie based on their comedic work at CollegeHumor.com. Don't know how that's gonna work out, but congrats, that's pretty big time.

Anyway, this site has always had a great staff of young writers, great humorous links, and one of the best funny, viral, Internet picture collections around. In fact they might even be responsible for the whole viral e-mail forward thing as we know it. ;)

Digg is a technology news website that combines social bookmarking, dynamic social RSS, and non-hierarchical editorial control. With digg, users submit stories for review, but rather than allowing an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do.

I've had this site in the queue since I began blogging sites again in June because I there were rumors that they were moving to version 2.0 floating about. While it finally happened on Sunday and so I give you, the new Digg 2.0.

Oh, so what is Digg you ask? Well it's the hottest new thing in tech news because it's user driven and therefor constantly updated. Users submit links and short descriptions and then they "digg" (vote) for links they find interesting. Then of course you can comment on this news which gives it the whole community thing, which is one of the big draws for me.

Well I'm moving to a new apartment with a friend this month and where do we turn to find out what's available, Craigslist. This site rocks, it's a free service (unless you're a business) classifieds site on the web that's been around forever and somehow manages to stay incredibly simple and ad free. I even found my job on this site.

San Francisco (my home) is the biggest Craigslist, but there are versions for tens of cities all over the world.

Now, Craigslist does a lot, and I will say that it's not always the best tool when it comes to getting stuff sold quickly or for the best price, but it's community attitude really does make it a great little piece of the web.

I'm trying not to feature every blog that comes out of the Weblogs, Inc. megafactory, but they just keep throwing out winners so I feel bad not mentioning them. Download Squad isn't really new ground, it's kinda like FileForum (with more commentary) or an extended software section of Lifehacker. But lots of good software knowledge is a good thing. In a world with little apps and utilities that do everything under the sun sometimes you need someone to break down the good and the bad and tell you what does what. Think how much of this stuff you never would have imagined you'd NEED when you got your first computer and were happy to play Frogger and put your tax stuff in Lotus.

Of course you can't live on the bleeding edge without putting up with a lot of crap. So be warned that you're gonna see some not ready for primetime stuff when you're downloading software from an up-to-the-minute software blog.

Brendon Connelly is a slacker, but not the lazy type. He defines slackers as "people who are good at doing what is important to them." I am a slacker. I'm always talking to friends and family about why they work and stress so hard and why I do just as well as them (in my not so humble opinion) and don't stress or overexert on unneccesary tasks.

At 18:47 CST the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer took off on it's attempt to fly around the world without stopping. The flight should take about 80 hours. Virgin Atlantic (in an effort to get as much advertising as possible out of their investment) has set up a site to track the historic flight.
