[Art/Taboo] PostSecret

postsecret.blogspot.com Posted by Picasa
PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail-in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard.
Part art project, part support group. People create beautiful, graphical post cards and tell their deepest, darkest secrets to the world.

[World.Sights] Google Sightseeing

googlesightseeing.com Posted by Hello
Google Sightseeing is brought to you by Alex, James & Olly who take you to the best tourist spots in the world via Google Maps' satellite imagery.
By this time everyone has been amazed by the power of Google Maps. You've found your house and zoomed in to see if you could find yourself out back barbecuing. You've probably even looked up old W's house at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Alex, James & Olly at Google Sightseeing have been blogging interesting locations ever since the satellite feature went live on Google Maps.

I won't even try to summarize a list of cool places they've already got listed because there are just too many. You have to check it out for yourself.

[Computers.Software] Download Squad

downloadsquad.com Posted by Hello

I'm trying not to feature every blog that comes out of the Weblogs, Inc. megafactory, but they just keep throwing out winners so I feel bad not mentioning them. Download Squad isn't really new ground, it's kinda like FileForum (with more commentary) or an extended software section of Lifehacker. But lots of good software knowledge is a good thing. In a world with little apps and utilities that do everything under the sun sometimes you need someone to break down the good and the bad and tell you what does what. Think how much of this stuff you never would have imagined you'd NEED when you got your first computer and were happy to play Frogger and put your tax stuff in Lotus.

Of course you can't live on the bleeding edge without putting up with a lot of crap. So be warned that you're gonna see some not ready for primetime stuff when you're downloading software from an up-to-the-minute software blog.

[Art.Vintage] Malls of America

mallsofamerica.blogspot.com Posted by Hello
Vintage photos of old Shopping Malls of the '60s & '70s
I personally wasn't around to visit any malls in the '60s & '70s, but thanks to Keith Milford now we all can step back in time and check out the shopping destinations of yesteryear. The art displays alone are worth the price of admission.

[Tech.Gadgets/Style] Uncrate

uncrate.com Posted by Hello
Uncrate is a web magazine for guys who love stuff. Our team finds the best gadgets, clothes, cars and more so you can blow your rent money easier.
This is a pretty cool new blog in the style of Cargo Magazine (but free!) which offers (hopefully unsponsored) product reviews and previews for the modern day meterosexual.

[Food.Cooking] Cooking For Engineers

cookingforengineers.com Posted by Hello
Have an analytical mind? Like to cook? This is the site to read!
"Making the simple complex is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity."
-- Charles Mingus
This guy's charts are awesome. He takes recipies and makes them into quick reference diagrams. It's a blog and not a reference site, so you've got to stick to the recipies he's come up with, but he has been doing it for a couple of years now so there is a good size library to browse and you can always share your own recipies in the forum.

[Culture.Internet] kottke.org

kottke.org Posted by Hello
Jason Kottke designs, codes, and writes for the web live from New York City, with a special interest in microcontent, the writable web, and clear, simple, user-centered design.

Jason has maintained the popular and influential weblog kottke.org since March 1998, writing about web technology, photography, media, design, the writable web, and science. He recently switched from doing the site in his spare time to editing/writing it full-time.
Simply stated this site is a personal blog specializing in interesting news. Kottke's been doing this for 7 years and he recently made big news (while, big in blogosphere terms) when he decided to quit his job and blog full time.

That's about the time this site found a permanent place in my bookmarks and since then I've been very impressed with his findings and ponderings. My favorite parts of kottke.org are the wealth of intellectual article links, book reviews/previews, and Internet news commentary.
